Hooked on Hessian is an arts program specialising in rug making that operates with the Perth community in Western Australia.

The techniques used by Hooked on Hessian are very different from the methods of rug-making known to most people. A hand machine, called a Rumpelstilskin which looks similar to an eggbeater simplifies the whole process of fixing the thread where the color is wanted. It lets the creative process flow from design to finished product. The end result is a functional mat, wall hanging, cushion cover or whatever your imagination can come up with!

It's fun, creative, safe and hassle free. With no small needles to thread, it is suitable for all from the age of 6 to 116.

The Hooked on Hessian team comprises Nathan and his assistant (mum) Norma. Together they have taken Hooked on Hessian to schools, scout groups, community halls, libraries, seniors homes, festivals, shopping centres and creative workshops.

purchasing a rumplestilskin Hi, Norma and Nathan, On Tuesday I was at Maurice Zeffort Home to see your workshop......it was absolutely fantastic, a wonderful opportunity for anyone who loves being creative, to try something different and achieve fabulous results. For me I saw an opportunity to create gifts for family and friends and also wall hangings that could be used for fun raising. Do you have any of the rumpleslitskins and frames available, if so please could you forward to me the prices for these? Thankyou both for the wonderful opportunity to see and learn another craft, also to bring enjoyment to so many people. Regards, Sue Submitted By: sue sawford

Can't see all of your website? Hi, This product looks very interesting. However, on the Home Page, you mention an 'Instructions section' ..... I can't find this? I also can't find the sales section to get an idea of costs. Thank you, Elaine Submitted By: Elaine Maul

Hooked on Hessian Hi. I became interested in your wallhanging work when I attended the recent Arts & Ageing Creativity Conference in Adelaide. I think you have achieved fantastic results for individuals. I work with elderly people - some with early onset dementia some who are quite frail. Also I am involved with a group of younger acquired brain injury people. I would love to obtain information about wallhanging projects and also about purchasing the tools required to make the wallhangings. Please contact me when you are able. regards Ann Submitted By: Ann Pietsch

getting started Good morning, I would like to try rug hooking and have had several tries, mostly unsuccessfully! I would like to know more about your machine and what types of fabric or yarn you use to make your rugs, I have tried using woolen fabric (from mens jackets, blankets etc...) but it is difficult to cut into strips and does fray. I do a lot of needle punch and your work looks similar to that, although it is difficult to tell in the photos. Could I give you a ring and have a chat about your products? Thanks for your time, Necia. Submitted By: necia

Rumplestiltskin speed needles for sale?? Hi Nathan and Norma, I've just found out about your inspiring work in my www search for the Rumplestiltskin speedneedle. I also make rugs using one of these (view here www.jocelynseccombe.com) and want to start teaching the craft here in Melbourne. The manufacturer seems to have stopped making them. Do you have any for sale and how much are they? Or do you know another supplier? I have to gauge interest before I commit to purchasing any so it's not a guaranteed sale yet. Probably not until next year. Keep up the good work - there's something about a rug that nothing else can compete with. Best wishes, Jocelyn Seccombe Submitted By: Jocelyn Seccombe
